Songs by John Dowland
Virtuosic Australian lutenist Rosemary Hodgson and Canadian tenor Justin Burwood will make time stand still in the serene bushland setting of Hummingbird Eco Retreat. Together they perform the works of John Dowland, considered to be one of the finest song composers England has ever produced.
Despite a reputation for melancholy, Dowland’s intimate songs soothe, calm and ravish the listener unlike any other music known. In them, we find reflected all of life and all of our humanity - love, pain, drama, passion and release – as relevant to us today as to those who first heard them during the Renaissance.
Set on the edge of National Trust bushland, the Hummingbird Eco Retreat grounds are the perfect setting to enjoy a post-performance gourmet picnic lunch with the artists – comprising a baguette and tart made with fresh seasonal produce, a delectable dessert and a glass of local boutique wine.
