Combattimento

Masterpieces by Monteverdi

Our 2013 opera offering brings you masterpieces by Claudio Monteverdi, a profoundly influential figure in the musical transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque periods, and featuring an outstanding assembly of Australian and international artists – soprano Greta Bradman, tenors Justin Burwood and Paul Bentley and bass-baritone Nicholas Dinopoulos, performing with one of Australia’s leading Baroque ensembles, Ludovico’s Band.

Monteverdi’s revolutionary belief that music must be subservient to words and should express deep emotions inspired his Madrigali dei guerrieri et amorosi (Madrigals of War and Love), which reflect the pursuits of love through the allegory of war.

The centerpiece of the evening’s performance,  Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, is perhaps the most famous of these works and a profound expression of Monteverdi’s musical and dramatic genius.

Other program highlights include the Prologue to L’Orfeo (widely considered to be the first opera), Lamento della Ninfa, also from Madrigals of War and Love, and Zefiro Torna, an ode to Zephyr, the west wind that brings Spring and its attendant opportunities for romance.
